Latest visiting guidance (April 2022)

We are changing some visiting restrictions in our in-patient areas.

Where face to face visits are not practical virtual visits should be supported and facilitated.  Here is the update:

Patients admitted for symptom management, that are not in their last week of life:

  • 2 visitors allowed in 24 hrs (appointments between 10am to 7pm)
  • Visitors are no longer required to provide proof of a negative lateral flow test to gain access to our inpatient areas or St John’s Hospice. When visitors attend the ward, our staff will still ask if they have any COVID-19 symptoms, if they are feeling unwell or if they have been in close contact with anyone who is COVID-19 positive. If any of these are a YES, then the visitor will not be able to access our inpatient areas
  • PPE to be worn
  • Visitors to remain in patient’s rooms, but asked to step outside (garden) if personal care required
  • Adjustments to visiting numbers to be made on an individual basis following a risk assessment. If patient has extreme psychological distress, an overnight stay can be considered following a risk assessment
  • Patients may go out on leave, if they are able, and be subject to PCR or lateral flow (obtained themselves) on their return if they have been in an at-risk venue (lots of people, crowded, no social distancing). Risk assessment with follow the guidance given by the Trust.

Patients in their last 7 days of life:

  • 4 visitors in 24 hours (2 slots of 2 people to limit the number of people in the room at one time) between 8am – 8pm – appointment only
  • 1 person may stay overnight
  • Visitors are no longer required to provide proof of a negative lateral flow test to gain access to our inpatient areas or St John’s Hospice. When visitors attend the ward, our staff will still ask if they have any COVID-19 symptoms, if they are feeling unwell or if they have been in close contact with anyone who is COVID-19 positive. If any of these are a YES, then the visitor will not be able to access our inpatient areas
  • PPE to be worn
  • Visitors to remain in patient’s rooms, but asked to step outside (garden) if personal care required
  • Adjustments to visiting numbers to be made on an individual basis following a risk assessment, but to limit the number in the room at one time and within the ward
  • National guidance advocates visiting for those patients at the end of life.

Patients in last hours of life:

  • Those closest to the patient may be with them when they are actively dying (limiting the number in the room to 4, unless they have a larger family and they will be risk assessed on an individualised basis. It is important for the grieving process to allow those closest to the patient, and for the patient, to be with them at the time of death.

Anyone showing any symptoms of COVID-19 or been in contact with a COVID-19 positive person, should not visit any of our hospital or healthcare settings. Please do not visit if you are feeling unwell, even if you have tested negative for COVID-19 and are fully vaccinated.

St John’s Information and Support Centre is open between 8.30am and 4.30pm (except bank holidays)
